Faith Based Investing
Faith-based Investing
Faith-based Investing is an act of ownership and stewardship, so Christians should seek to own businesses that actively contribute to human flourishing, not just avoid harmful ones.
Several key ideas:
- Investing is ownership. When you buy shares of a company, you become a partial owner. Because of that, investors bear some moral responsibility for what those companies do.
- Love your neighbor through investing. We believe capital should support companies that create products and services that improve people's lives, treat employees fairly, serve customers honestly, and contribute positively to society.
- Avoid harmful businesses. In addition to excluding industries many Christians object to (such as pornography, gambling, and tobacco), they encourage avoiding companies whose business models depend on exploitation or addiction.
- Seek businesses that promote flourishing. They favor companies advancing healthcare, education, innovation, environmental stewardship, and other areas that help people thrive.
- Financial performance still matters. Investing in companies creating long-term value for stakeholders can also produce competitive long-term investment returns, although there are no guarantees and faith-based strategies may at times underperform broader markets.
In summary, faith-based investing involves three commitments:
- Invest with integrity by aligning your portfolio with biblical values.
- Create positive impact by directing capital toward businesses that benefit society.
- Pursue long-term returns while recognizing that financial success and ethical investing can be compatible.
This approach is broader than traditional values screening. Instead of asking only, “What companies should I avoid?” – which is important, but also ask, “Which companies am I proud to own because they help make the world better?”
